Warmest greetings from the organizers of the CME titled “Strengthening Home-based Care for Severe Mental Disorders in Low Resource Settings”, organized by Department of Psychiatry and NDDTC, AIIMS, New Delhi and Indian Association for Social Psychiatry.

Mental health resources are limited in low and middle income countries. Patients with severe mental disorders following acute care in a hospital set up are living with their families. Following the control of active symptoms, the patients need continuous support and care to return to the mainstream, which is often lacking in LAMI countries, since community mental health care is not adequately developed to meet the needs. Absence of community programs, deficit symptoms and adherence issues often interfere in maintaining improvement and interfere in recovery.
Locally relevant, affordable and sustainable solutions catering for local needs and working within the local constraints are needed. The family caregivers face considerable burden and stress because of the care giving role, and often feel ill equipped to meet the caring needs of their wards.

This CME aims at deliberations on home based care for severe mental disorders for continuity of care from hospital to home, coordinated between families, patients and mental health professionals. Please head over to https://aiimspsychiatry.org/shocap2019 to register for the event.
