Psychotherapycouldhavebiologicaleffectsthatworktogetherwithmedicationtoreversebiologicalabnormalities.StudiesofbiologicalmarkerssuchassleepEEG,neuroreceptorsandthyroidhormonelevelshaveshownthatpsychotherapyexertseffectsonbrainactivityandneuroendocrinefunctioning.Also,positronemissiontomographyscanningtechniqueshavebeenusedtoinvestigatesimilaritiesanddifferencesbetweentheactionsofpsychotherapyandpharmacotherapyonbrainpathwaysinvolvedinthepathophysiologyofmajormentaldisorders. Duringthepast4decades,severalimportantstudieshavecomparedmonotherapywithacombinedapproach,andclinicianshavegainedextensiveexperienceinusingdifferentmethodsforcombiningtreatments.
InthisCME,weexaminethecurrentstatusofcombinedpharmacotherapyandpsychotherapyfrombothaclinicalandresearchperspective.Eruditespeakerswillprovidetherationaleforbringingbiologicalandpsychologicaltherapiestogetherinacomprehensiveapproachtotreatment.Also,speakerswillofferpracticalguidelinesforusinganintegratedtreatmentapproach.
